I've been having similar experiences on 64 bit systems, both with an ATI
RADEON 4650 in my Desktop, and Intel HD (on chip i5 3210m) graphics. As
it affects Noveau, NVidia, ATI and Intel, it really does not seem to be
related to graphics drivers.
I suspect this is a much more frequent problem than

Oh no, it still exists for GeForce 210 but it is just more seldom...
Now I got the following in my Xorg.log:
[ 829.352] (EE) Backtrace:

My issue does not exist for GeForce 210. So its card-dependent.

Xorg freeze with Nouveau drivers

I also suffer from random freezes with Nouveau driver in KUbuntu 12.10 (64 bit).
My graphics card is GeForce 7300 GT.
The issue occures when some KWin animation is being rendered (usually window
minimization).
This animation often stucks in some middle point, and I can no longer do
anything with
I'm seeing the same behavior (screen freeze, mouse still movable) from
nvidia. Still nothing interesting in the xorg log, but here's the end of
my dmesg:

status 001d
[ 3361.844898] NVRM: Xid (:05): 9, Channel 00
I also have had random crashes on my Ubuntu 12.04 32bit machine, seems
to only happen when running a movie with movieplayer, with VLC or when
google earth is in use... no other situations seem to reproduce the
crash in which the screen goes totally scrambled, no keyboard or mouse
control... as stat
Xorg.0.log and dmesg attached as requested.
I saved them by switching to VT.
However, I don't think they have anything useful in them - nothing
related to an error at the end.

FYI I am not on nouveau (or Nvidia). I have an ATI FireGL 5250 and use
radeon.
And for me the system isn't completely frozen, I can CTRL-ALT-F1 over
and see the logs there. Killing the session restarts it and sometimes
works.

Ok just experienced the issue again but on 3.2.0-23 kernel. So it isn't
a kernel issue (for me). Though it definitely seems to happen less
often with the older kernel.

The problem is there are a million possible reasons why a freeze could
occur, usually nouveau dies after an invalid instruction or memory
access occurs. There is some work being done so the system won't
completely freeze in the future, but it's not complete yet. If the
screen freezes, can you log i
I'm having a similar bug with the radeon driver. Randomly (though often
when watching youtube) the screen would just stop updating. I could
move the mouse cursor around and I think it was accepting keyboard input
but nothing on the screen updated. I could ctrl-alt-f1 over and kill
the x session
I switched to the ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver, and I got
just the same - freeze when using LibreOfficer writer (this time when
selecting text).
So perhaps this in an xorg bug, not just the nouveau drivers, or perhaps
the same bug is in both drivers.
Can we move this to "High" import
Is there any chance of increasing the importance of this bug?
This bug is the equivalent of BSOD (all your running apps have to be
terminated), and it's happening to me multiple times a day. I can barely
use LibreOffice at all, as it usually causes a freeze within a few
minutes of use. It's happen
I'm getting this quite regularly with LibreOffice when scrolling using
the scroll wheel. It has happened twice in Writer, within an hour, and
just now in Calc within a few minutes of opening it.
The whole interface freezes and does not respond to anything, but the
mouse still moves. I can still sw
Can you get a dmesg blindly after a freeze? From what I can tell in the
Xorg log the card froze, which likely means there's more information in
the kernel log.
