Same issue with a Sony VIAO VGN-NS31M : Kernel Panic during install.

Can confirm that problem does not occur with Ubuntu-3.2.0-24.37. No
workarounds needed, operation as normal after upgrading to

that I created following the comment #6 of bug 984387.
Now the boot is normal and all is fine for me.

The acpi=off option also doesn't seem to help in my case -Dell 1340 studio XPS
13 again.
nomodeset and nouveau.blacklist=1.Also seems to be useless.
Suppose it is something to do with the Nvidia hybrid SLI graphics card.

It seems it works with the option acpi=off.
But after the installation, it must be added in the boot option of grub (I
still did not find how to do it automatically^^).
Btw, after this, I also had to purge nvidia*, but I don't know if it is related
to this bug.

I was able to install using the alternate installer. However I am not
able to boot post install. You will probably notice the same, not being
able to boot post install with the same error message.
It is interesting though that so ar all affected systems have been Dell
Studio XPS 13.

kernel panic with ubuntu 12.
due to the nature of the bug, i'm unable to run that command. I can not
get into the filesystem without using a live cd. which is how i fixed
the problem. I used a live cd to run a dist-upgrade and all is well.
Hope the kernel version that got updated gets pushed to the installers
as well.
