Same thing happened to me. In my case xbacklight had a problem with choosing
the right device in /sys/class/backlight/
To fix this I found a solution on

1. Create /etc/X
Not sure if this bug is fixed or not yet? and it seems that some
machines are affected and some other are not!

You are not alone, I too have the very same issue. I do have it on HP
Pavilion dv6 - Core i5 and 4GB RAM - Lubuntu 12.04 64bit.
I can't look at the screen at all O_o
