upgrading from 12.04 (where this bug did not exist for me) to 12.10.
After adding the several times mentioned acpi=force, sometimes the machine
turns off but most the time it doesn't.

I had the same issue on a new Lenovo Thinkpad x220. I had always used "sudo
halt" to shut down the system and discovered that it actually halts the system
instead of powering it off. I think this behavior probably changed in recent
Ubuntu releases, because in earlier versions the system powered

Latest one this is that on one occasion it shutdown when triggered from
the top right shutdown menu, BUT it had failed to cleanly unmount
leading to a disk check on a 2TB (WD Caviar Green) drive, which was no

I don't believe that it is an Nvidia bug as I have an AMD graphics card.
Tried using both command "sudo shutdown -P now" and top right computer
icon to shutdown but hangs. Only happens if computer is on for a long
time. I have to press button to restart computer, log in and then

The very same NVidia proprietary drivers (and hardware setup) on Lucid
LTS cause no shutdown problems, but they do in Precise. Also nouveau is

my working xubuntu install was 64 bit as opposed to the 32 bit I was

I marked this as an nvidia driver bug because a few users have reported
that the problem went away when using noveau, and I didn't see any other
cards or drivers mentioned on this bug report. But if the Catalyst
driver also has this problem then maybe it is a bigger issue. Do you

setup, as a couple of others, is an AMD radeon card with the propietary
driver. Same result. I see this bug has been marked nvidia only. If
this is a deliberate decision to look at the bugs separately then I'll
unsubscribe.

your previous experience with testing mainline kernels.
