Happens to me in XFCE in Ubuntu 12.10 (quantal).
See screenshots of gEdit. It's fine when only 1 tab is open, if I open
another tab the background goes black. If I close all tabs it stays
black until I restart the app.

For me it happens right from the start whether I use XFCE or KDE.

The fundamental question is whether this is a bug in GTK or in the
affected applications (using GTK 3 the wrong way). I'm leaning more
towards the latter since I find it unlikely that the default (gray)
theme would contain such a severe and obvious bug.

The black tab bug is still there. As a workaround the themes mentioned above do
still work.

I can confirm, that switching to Ambiance or Radiance themes in the XFCE theme
settings fixes this issue.
I'm assuming this is a bug in XFCE in combination with GTK-Apps and maybe GTK 3.

After some more testing I have found that out of the five standard
themes in Ubuntu 12.04, Ambiance and Radiance work but High Contrast,
High Contrast Inverse and Raleigh (Default) are affected by the black
tab bug.

I just cross-checked: I use the Clearlooks theme in XFCE, leading to
this bug.
