I also have this problem in 12.04 beta 2 (not sure if it happens in
other versions as well). It happens on an Asus N53SV-S1827V. Suspend
results in a non-responsive black screen but the laptop stays on. The
only way out is by shutting the laptop down using the power button. I

After lots of experiments I found out that the problem is with the
xhci_hcd module. The strange thing is that other people with the same
laptop model didn't encounter the same issue. The following script fixed
it (placed under /etc/pm/sleep.d/):
