Thanks for the idea.
Unfortunately, i don't have a "smart 5.1" entry in my mixer. That's unusual
because I am fairly sure it was there in 11.10.

I installed Ubuntu 12.04 yesterday and i had the exact same problem.
Sound would only come from the front panel jacks where the headset was
plugged in, but not from the back where the stereo amplifier was plugged
in.
I also installed the ALSA devel (DKMS) modules but that didnt solve the
problem (

No sound output
I forgot to mention that under sound settings modes: there is no
"headphones" settings, but there are all the other speaker output modes
(duplex 4.0, 5.1, etc), and selecting any of these modes does not help.
I am happy to provide anything or run any tests.
