Apologies. It's fixed. For me, this was a digital configuration matter
found in the http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Configuring_Digital_Sound
"If you are feeding the receiver raw audio (PCM), then 'Data: audio' is
correct. However, if you are feeding it an encoded stream (Dolby AC3 or

Upgraded everything to Precise. No change. Still perfect DTS passthrough
but DD is silent although identified as DD 3/2 by receiver.

After new upgrades, DTS 5.1 now works perfectly. DD 5.1 output is identified by
receiver but is silent. These two scenarios are true of Mythtv and VLC.
Playing Music in Mythtv is fine in PCM stereo but if I check the 'Convert

3/2 displays on receiver but no sound. This was the exact situation with Mythtv

I have the digital pass-through configured with Mythtv
(ALSA:hw:CARD=NVidia,DEV=3) as has worked well for months (The PulseAudio
observation was a red herring, sorry. I don't use it.).
Tried
Forgot to add, that 5.1 isn't supported by default with PulseAudio, so
you were never going to see in mythtv support for AC3 / DTS when using
PulseAudio
