If you're on Ubuntu 64 bit BOX then please try this one first
sudo apt-get autoremove --purge skype
and then
sudo apt-get install skype -y this must fix your broken skype and
silent crash as well.

I found my problem. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 32-bits.
First I tried doing what ArTaX suggested, which basically disables
Pulse. Skype works, but Ubuntu sounds controls do not, so you need to
use alsamixer to adjust volume settings.

Skype works fine on my different partition which runs on archlinux, but Ubuntu
crashes silently after maybe 10 mins. I tried following terminal entry while

I'm running Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" KDE 64-bit and have been having this
problem. The fix seems to be to ensure you have ia32-libs installed as
well as ia32-libs-multiarch which does not come preinstalled.
Installing ia32-libs-multiarch fixed the problem for me.
