rich, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .
I forgot to say, I'm on Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS,
lightdm is version 1.2.3-0ubuntu2.3
xserver-xorg-video-ati is version 1.6.14.99~git20111219.aacbd629-0ubuntu2

I had probably the same problem with an ATI 9100 (r200) using
xserver-xorg-video-ati/xserver-xorg-video-radeon driver.
I noticed that 3d acceleration was working ("glxinfo|grep direct" showed
"direct rendering: Yes" and glxgears worked fine), anyway seems like "lightdm"
is not able to check it c
Yet this message when I set up a second monitor via the gnome-control-center:
Failed to apply the selected configuration displays
rebuemy virtual size does not fit into the available space required: = (2560,
1024), minimum = (320, 200), maximum = (1280, 1280)

After updating the system was loaded into the graphics mode when you select the
first item(run in low-graphics mode for just one session),
but as I said start GDM, not lightdm.
At the same time if I remove the gdm, the system in graphical mode does not
start.
I also noticed that a sad moment.

I have an nvidia card, and the same problem. By doing this when the
error screen appears I'm able to access Ubuntu 12.04 gui. (I use the
gnome shell)
1. CTRL + ALT + F1
2. (login)
3. sudo start lightdm

OK, thanks - I'll let the X guys look at this a bit further.
Notes:
Your /var/log/Xorg.0.log looks fine to me
however the x-0.log in the tar from your /var/log/lightdm looks dodgier:
(EE) No supported AMD display adapters were found
(II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported.
