I verify this problem. (12.04 x64 here).
It critically affects battery life, so its importance is not jut "low".
Battery life is lower when using ubuntu compared to windows 7, so I
think that it should be fix

Experiencing a similar problem in 12.04 64-bit... Brightness settings
not persistant, all packages up to date. The brightness seems to change
at times as well, it's especially noticeable if I open Firefox on a
blank white page, you can see the brightness adjusting itself for some
unknown reason

There is even more buggy in the brightness settings. When I go to
battery power the screen dims. This is ok, but when i go back to main
power the screen wil dim even more instead to return to normal level of
brightness.

I did not install a live CD, but I updated from the Update manager. I
updated all the available components including the gnome configuration
settings daemon. The problem still exitst and I am still using the old
hack.

Just yesterday there was a fix on gnome-settings-daemon, can you please try a
live usb session (create it with startup disk creator) to see if fix your
problem ?
