AGC is one of the options for checkboxes in the Advanced panel. It makes
sound louder and crisper, and that's about all I expect it to do.

If it happens when gnome-volume-control is not running it's not due to
it. You mentionned "Automatic Gain Control", could you describe where
you have the option and what you expect it to do?
