i run an up-to-date feisty on my dell inspiron 6000 (with aiglx, and the
i810 driver for my intel 915gma card). i've also heard of this
affecting people with nvidia cards, so this likely has little/nothing to
do with video card drivers.

Here ctrl-alt-backspace turns my screen black, and nothing more...
I have to switch to another TTY and restart gdm from there.
Using feisty up-to-dated, XGL, and fglrx drivers for my ATI card.
