Joseph,
just curious - what makes you think that this issue is indeed kernel
based? For some reason, I personally believe that this might be a gnome-
setting-daemon issue.
So, before I post an upstream kernel bug, could you please enlighten me?

I just tried the upstream kernel (3.3.0-999-generic) and the issue still
persists.
What else can I do? This is really frustrating, especially because the
F5/F6 keys mess up the icon- and window-themes instead now.
I noticed other postings regarding this issue as well here: #832603.

Just wanted to show you this little Kazam screen cast that shows the
behavior of the icon theme inside a Nautilus window when pressing F5.
Remember - F5 used to always allow me to decrease the brightness of my
MBP's keyboard backlight. Now, it messes up the icon theme...

I just tried 3.2.0-12 and the behavior is the same. Really frustrating,
too, as pressing F5/F6 changes the theme (icons, context menues, etc)
instead of adjusting the keyboard backlight. :(

I rebooted into the kernel you suggested and the behavior is still the

chosen Faenza icon theme to the default one, also affecting the look of
context menus, etc. Very strange

I would like to see this one confirmed and, as needed, expanded upon.
I also have lost the brightness and audio controls, but they came back
eventually, with F5/F6 still acting weird (see here for what they do now

I just did the updates, the problem is still existent.
But I totally loose all function keys permanently except of the
backward-play-forward keys after using F5/6 for keyboard backlight.
I'm on MacbookPro 7.1.
Confirm the bug or make a new one?

Yes, indeed. I run apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade several times

fine.
I noticed that when pressing F5 or F5,
