Installer crashed on me a couple times; cleaning the cd didn't help
that. I mem-tested and found nothing wrong, so i reburnt the cd at a
lowerspeed- crashed once . On the next try, the liveCD install was
successful. Onto other fun errors...

three times with no success. It's always crashed at copying files.

Initial signs are this is an Unionfs problem. It is sleeping (and hence
causing a re-schedule), while in an atomic section. Sleeping can't
occur in atomic sections without oopsing the kernel.
Will investigate futher.

Was this a one-off oops or does it always occur when trying to install
from the liveCD? Have you successfully managed to use the liveCD
installer to install Ubuntu?
