Now that I booted the live cd, I was able to install the system. The
system booted without any extra options. ACPI appears to be working.

OK. the CD is SCSI. From the initramfs prompt, I was able to mount /dev/scd0 on
/cdrom
I rebooted and added the acpi=off option, which i found on a post for a similar
bug. This allowed the system to boot.

First.
The CDROM is IDE, not SCSI as I orginally thought
second.
The kernel does not seem to be able to access the cdrom. at the (initramfs)
prompt, ls /dev/hd* reports no files found. ls /dev shows several scsi devices,
tty devices, etc. but no IDE devices.
