This problem is not specific to Firefox. I get the exact same issue with
gvim. It seems to me that there are two factors involved - (1) the
nVidia driver and (2) GTK - assuming Firefox is built on GTK as well. I
note (1) because I never run into this problem on my home computer,
which has a built-i
I don't get this problem if I disable the Nvidia drivers and revert to
Nouveau, but that isn't really a fix.

I'm seeing this problem with all GTK applications, not just Firefox.
They work fine after first booting up, but after logging out and then
back in they all show black text on black backgrounds and don't revert
to normal without rebooting.
Could be releated to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/u
I tried the "work around" and it does not work for me. Is there
anything more that clicking and navigating within the NVIDIA control
panel?

While I am no longer using Firefox or have a machine with nVidia
graphics, I can report that I noticed this exact behavior when I was
running Firefox on a ThinkPad T410 with nVidia NVS 3100M. And I had
discovered the same work-around Søren Holm did.

Another "me too" reply. My current workaround is to start Nvidia Settings,
which is also mainly black. As I click on things inside the Nvidia Settings and
move the mouse around, the various elements star
