This is extremely interesting that it works sometimes, and doesn't work
other times. At first, this sounds exactly like bug 3731, however no
one has ever reported this working intermittently as you have. It's
very clear looking at your xorg.conf file that sometimes it detects the
monitor

I got the same screen, and the same problem. I think line
timing: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hz Interlaced (8514A)
is wrong and must be removed in screen definition to solve bug (Screen
specifs are between 60 and 75 Hz).

We're lucky because when I started again live CD (by the way daily live
20-03-2007), it did once 1280x1024 and 2nd time 1024x768
I cheched from your suggestion the 2 different xorg.conf
One detected the right screen and stated:
QY [Radeon 7000/VE]"
Monitor "L70S"
If you know how, adding package xresprobe, then in a console doing 'sudo
ddcprobe > ddcprobe.txt' and then attaching ddcprobe.txt file would also
help.
