Would it be possible to simply add a warning for small root partitions?
Just set a fixed "soft minimum" like 5GB, and if the size is less than
that warn the user that they may run into problems. That way people who
know what they are doing can still attempt installs on really small

crosses many layers in complicated ways so is unlikely to be fixed any
time soon. In the meantime, it is a valid bug and should remain open.
