Actually it should be \e not \\. \\ has weird semantics and you should
avoid it unless you know what you're doing. See 'info groff', the
"Character Translations" node.

You can continue a line onto the next line by ending it with a '\'.
But it should be a double slash:
You can continue a line onto the next line by ending it with a '\\'.
