Hello,
I'm testing Ubuntu precise (12.04) i386 and set this value with gconf-
editor[1]. Apparently nm-applet still use GConf:
$ gconftool --get /apps/nm-applet/show-applet
true

what version of ubuntu are You using?
In precise I can't find gconf any more.
Also the pakage that provided gconf can not be found with "apt-cache search"
