I can't reproduce it on Ubuntu 12.04 (precise). I can find VLC in the
dash by typing "vlc" or "VLC". It is also listed in the Media section.
With the upcoming 2.0.1 release even "video" should work (see bug
#943014).
@Rémi: There is nothing to do for upstream VLC.
