Still not fixed using Ubuntu 13.10. Workaround in #5 didn't work for me

Confirmed, Ubuntu 12.10, empty menus with acroread 9.5.1 downloaded from
adobe website. Doug's workaround #5 works (thanks), but its just
owrkaround, not fix...
is this really not fixed since 11.10??
