Unfortunately adding
options snd-hda-intel model=asus
to file
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Forgot to mention I have an Acer-Aspire 8930 where I have seen a post
from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1043568 where it suggests
that the options snd-hda-intel model should be set to auto for my
device.
