Starting with version 52, the backspace key isn't a valid shortcut for
going back to the previous page. This is a conscious design decision.
There are extensions that allow enabling the backspace key as a
shortcut, if you really need that.

This seems to be an intentional design desicion on the part of the
chrome developers.
I have linked the upstream bug report requesting the reinsertion of
'backspace'
In the meantime, please use this extension (which will enable the
behavior for you):
