I was not able to simply revert back to the ubuntu maintained version of the nvidia driver and reinstalled my system using a 12.04 daily-live. My problem seems to be present there as well, although 12.04 provides the latest nvidia driver. This bug seems to be caused by the ubuntu packaged version,
