xserver-xgl has been deprecated upstream, and removed from Intrepid.
Closing the bug as won't fix.

Yes, I'm using XGL and Beryl with fglrx drivers.
I've changed that key to 0 and also transparency key (above that one) to
0 because it was set to 0.5
Now xchat works. Anyway the bug is still there. If I touch again that
setting it crashes...

Are you using Xgl or something?
You can restore your background setting the gconf key
"/apps/xchat/main_window/background_type" to 0.
