This is incredibly messy.
Before marking bugs as duplicates, please attach all the necessary
information and make sure a developer can review it. This is most
certainly not a bug in NetworkManager if it's really about alternate
installs and d-i setting configuration in /etc/network/interfaces.

Here's what was happening: my wifi interface was showing up as up but unmanaged
(this
