I'll close this bug as the looping was definitely caused by gnome-
settings-daemon not being present. If you are still having the blank
login screen can you open a new bug? Please attach lightdm.log again.

Yes; although with most recent update, it displays the login screen
briefly then goes blank. No looping now. :)
