Sorry, I forgot to specify that I'm a Kubuntu user, and the problem is
not limited to gnome... look at the screenshot.

Sure, I can revert the libwxgtk2.8-dev build-dep to libwxgtk2.6-dev in
the next upload. There were mumblings that using wxWidgets 2.8 resolved
the full screen issue, however, and I've lacked time to chase the svn
commits.

Will libwxgtk2.6 be in feisty ?
If yes it can be an easy solution

Is someone working on that bug ?
The priority of that bug is fixed to "low". I don't think it should.
There is a lot of people of there using VLC and it will be a very bad
thing for feisty to have a buggy vlc (even though it's graphical, that's
the first thing final users see ) .

Hi,
That's a wxwidgets 2.8 problem.
When VLC 0.8.6 was released wxwidgets 2.8 was not out or has just been for a
while, so VLC's interface has been coded with 2.6 in mind. ( to be honest i'm
surprised it even compiled with 2.8)
So it's either a bug in wxwidgets, sth wrong in vlc code or a work

UPDATE:
instead of an "apt-get install vlc" from the universe repo, i tried to compile
from source with "apt-get -b source vlc". Now the volume control is available
and effective, but the applet i estetically imperfect.
I run kubuntu in a amd sempron with a custom 2.6.19 kernel.

Me too I got this problem when I made the last update to 0.8.6.release-
0ubuntu3 for Ubuntu feisty. The volume applet simply has disappeared.
The volume control remain available, anyway, by keyboard shortcut. Tried
changing kde theme (plastik, keramik, ecc.) but doesn't work.

Tried removing ~/.vlc it had no effect on the problem. Also tried
logging in as a new user just in case theming etc had messed with vlc in
some way. This also had no effect.
