package from kubuntu (to be precise the computer now correctly detects
the resolution of the one external monitor I've tried it with since I
installed the update last week). I have no idea if the edid options in
xorg work and no in
apport information

Using the latest nvidia driver from kubuntu (2.80.13) the monitor
resolution problem appears to be fixed. However this has had some odd
side effects:
First time I installed the driver the mouse buttons and window
maximisation appeared broken - instead of the maximise button giving
vertical max /

I can also confirm the presence of the older bug:
Regardless of the external monitor resolution (at present only 640x480
is possible) whenever a movie player starts (vlc / mplayer / kmplayer /
xine tested) the external monitor turns off and then turns back on.
