I don't see why the middle-click close can't be added for Precise . It's
an existant option in Scale Addons (which I believe is in the main
plugins pack) . The option is in CCSM->Scale addons->close_button - just
set middle click as a default .

Thanks for your bug report, the spread is definitely an area that has
some issues could do with design attention and improvement,
unfortunately improvements to the spread won't be landing with 12.04,
but hopefully with a subsequent release.
