This actually appears to be a duplicate of bug 919350. I am currently
bisecting and building test kernels for that bug. It would be great if
folks commenting on this bug could test the kernels I post to that
I'd like to perform a kernel bisect to identify the commit that caused
this issue. I'll build a test kernel and post a link to it shortly.

I have the same problem with my Sony Vaio Z13. It works great with last kernel
3.0.0-14 but boot with a "black screen" since the first kernel 3.0.0-15.
My laptop got dual graphics card (Intel/nvidia) but I always use the intel one.

Using the 3.0.0-14.23 kernel, the HP Elitebook 2540p boots normally
without a problem, but when booting with the 3.0.0-15.25 kernel, the
screen also goes blank for me. I thought at first the problem may be
that it thinks a second monitor as the main one so I plugged a second
monitor in. The second
The 3.0.0-15.25 kernel is the one causing the trouble for me.

When booting into 3.0.0-15 via recovery mode (picked "resume normal
boot" in the first dialog), I also get the error from Bug #651104 and
Unity comes up in unaccelerated 2D mode. Again, this can be fixed by
going back to 3.0.0-14.

I can boot 3.0.0-15 if I choose recovery mode from the GRUB menu, then
pick the options to boot normally. I am guessing that this is somehow
related to the additional graphics mode changes.
In case this is relevant, this notebook has an SSD (race condition?)
