What I did to resolve it, was run apt-get upgrade, which then after
updating, resolved the problem from the gui.

Are you are running gnome? I assumed you were running KDE because you
filed the bug against adept.
Sounds like a gksu bug. Is there anything 'strange' about your password
like nonenglish characters and/or deadkeys that it might not be
recognizing for some reason?
