The status-icon plugin has been removed from the upstream source on
2011-04-04. From rhythmbox's changelog:
remove status icon plugin
The notification part is going to reappear in a separate plugin soon,
and the status icon might come back on its own if anyone's interested

The rhythmbox-plugins package for Oneiric does not contain the file
/usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/status-icon/libstatus-icon.so which is
present in older versions of the package.
