Just realized that there's a pkg "xpdf-utils" in Ubuntu, too, where
pdfimages works.

The same here (Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 LTS). pdfimages doesn't work at all.
(On Debian where pdfimages belongs to pkg xpdf-utils it works fine.
