I've not seen this behavior myself, but it might be a hardware-specific
issue.

I think this one was really a moot point, it that, when I went back and
reinstalled the system again and manually chose the graphics resolution
before booting to the DESKTOP CD it did NOT occur after that. BUT, I
did not have to follow that procedure when installing Dapper on this
same machine.
