I tried it. unity --reset appears to kinda sorta work and start Unity
3D. However it is unusable, and logging in with it still doesn't work.

Can you please try to open a terminal in the unity-2d session and launch:
unity --reset
there and tell us if unity-3d starts? If so, then, if you logout and login back
again to the unity 3d session, does it work?
