I have the same issue as the OP. Additionally, when browsing the mount
point it contains two of the apps that are on the phone and nothing
else??! When I opened Shotwell the first time I was able to see the
preview images under "Documents on Joakim Ryden's iPhone". I hit "import
all" and got the me

Alan, what's the name of your phone in iTunes? Shotwell is supposed to
display the name of the phone rather than just "iPhone" if there's a
name set.
Is it possible the name somehow got set to "Documents on Alan Pope's
iPhone"?

I, for one, can't reproduce this. I'm also running Ubuntu 11.10. If I
plug in an iPhone running iOS 5 and then start Shotwell, the Shotwell
sidebar shows the device as "iPhone".
