This test machine has been reinstalled with Xubuntu 11.10 so I can no
longer perform the requested test at this time.
However, at the time of testing and bug reporting, all updates were in
place.

Okay, from apport data its clear you ARE using Unity 2D. So yeah, this
bug seems similar to bug #827414 . Try installing all updates on your
11.10 system, and if the issue continues, then please re-open this bug.

The login id panel option has Ubuntu selected and not Ubuntu 2D, so I
assume that means 3D.
I have some doubts because Unity would not install at all in Ubuntu
11.04 on this machine. Now on 11.10, it does.

I have rebooted 3x and the problem is reproducible across all 3 boots.
Every odd (1,3,5) invocation fails. Under these circumstances, the Text
Editor icon blinks 4x in the launcher and then disappears. gedit is not
launched.
