Note that it usually works (alt+f2 -> type command to run); what's
confusing, it doesn't work *sometimes* :|

I use Ubuntu 11.04 with LibreOffice installed from packages.
oowriter is a symlink; I use it on other systems to launch the Writer
quickly (alt+f2 -> oowriter -> Enter).
$ ls -l /usr/bin/oowriter
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 2011-10-07 09:22 /usr/bin/oowriter -> lowriter

the "run a command" mode doesn't use .desktop files, it does look for
binaries
what ubuntu version do you use? how did you install openoffice? Ubuntu
switched to libreoffice in recent versions

Thats because the applications lens does not look into /usr/bin for
.desktop files (to my knowledge).
