With an up-to-date Oneiric (kernel and distribution), I can use external
monitor only. However, I have experienced some crashes of compiz while
changing the display settings (reported separately). So, it is possible
that bug 791752 has resurfaced in the latest natty kernel.

If this is a duplicate of bug 791752, you should be able to use the
oneiric kernel without the issue. Can you test the Oneiric kernel and
see if the issue goes away? The Oneiric kernel is available from:

Maybe it is that bug. Kernel 2.6.38-10.46 is broken as well and I cannot
use external monitor only with it.

that's the kernel I use for my work and it there is no problem with
using external monitor as an only monitor.
