It is not a compiz/unity/lightdm bug. The only constant so far in reproducing
this error is an opengl based desktop environment.
I tested lightdm/gdm/unity/gnome 3/awesome/unity 2d.

Yes, I can confirm that changing to unity2d "fixes" everything. I can
switch users just fine.

First: Sorry for my crappy paste of the ubuntu-bug information in my
previous post.
Second: If I switch from unity to unity2d, the freezes do not occur; as
the OP has problems with fglrx and I with nvidia (and others e.g. to be
found at askubuntu.org with intel graphics) it seems that the
context/

Steps to reproduce, 100% of the time for me:
1. Log in.
2. Click on my name on the upper right corner.
3. Select any other user.
4. Whole system hangs.
