I have the same problem..
running 64-bit edgy.
alsa-utils stop or restart results in:
amixer: Mixer hw:0 load error: Invalid argument
..repeated a bunch of times.
alsamixer results in:
alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument

When I say sound "doesn't work." I mean that no sound comes out of the
laptop speakers, although ubuntu seems to have no idea that sound isn't
working. No errors that I have no sound card configured come up, and
