I have recently performed a clean install of Hardy (after initially an upgrade).
Since then the issue is no longer present.
Therefor, from my perspective, I consider this as SOLVED.
I have updated the related thread (see
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=370987) accordingly

No I have not gtk-qt-engine installed. Find below the result of dpkg -s

Package `gtk-qt-engine' is not installed and no info is available.
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,

If I switch to another user, the calculator buttons are just fine.
Switching themes (back to me as regular user) the buttons remain confused.
Judging from the above I would believe the confusion has something to do
with a user related (configuration) file or setting.

Does it happen with an another user? Does it depend of the theme you are

Having recently installed Gutsy as a guest in a VM (Feisty as host) I have
checked and in this installation the calculator buttons are fine again.
Just as they were when in Feisty when I was running Feisty as guest in VM with
Edgy as a host.
My current guess is thus that there must be some (conf
I have checked my /etc/environment file (based on my earlier comments).
The content of my environment file in my current Feisty installation is as
follows:
LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
LANGUAGE="en_US:en"
I do hope you have sufficient information for now.
If you require more information, please let me know
As can be seen in the uploaded files, the divide button indicates a minus sign
(-) while the multiply button shows double quotes (").
This is the same in all four calculator views.
Just wanted to let you know.

I have recently upgraded to Feisty. Although the calculator had no issues on
the cleanly installed Feisty in the Virtual Machine, it has the same issue now
as in Edgy.
So I have confused calculator buttons (still/again).

This is as I would have expected, just wanted to make sure that you were aware
of the fact that I did use a Virtual Machine.
Nevertheless, thank you for confirming.

Yes the Feisty version works fine. No problems there.
However I like to point out that I have Feisty running in a Virtual Machine,
which maybe can make a difference?

I have tried to eliminate the problem by altering the /etc/environment file.
In my Edgy installation I have changed the file so it looked exactly the same
as the one in the Feisty installation.
After restart, the calculator still behaved the same (with "confused buttons")
So I re-installed Gcalcto
I have compared the situation with my Feisty installation (which I have
running in a VirtualBox VM) and noticed the following:
In Feisty I do not have this issue, but there is a difference in the
/etc/environment file.
In Edgy the following is stated:
