I found the problem to do with a previously stored key in known_hosts.
On the command line you get a prompt and then an error, until you remove
the offending line. On the GUI you get none of this just a failure.

it could be useful to run /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-sftp from a command line
before trying to mount the ssh share and see what debug output is
printed there

I have the exact same problem. It is also preventing Deja Dup from
