I loaded 11.10 into a VM and was not able to reproduce the bug with
imagemagick 8:6.6.0.4-3ubuntu1.

I'm not sure if this would be feasible or make a difference for you,
but before I confirm this, I do see a newer version of imagemagick in
the repos; could you see if this still occurs in the newer version?
