Yesterday I ran memtest86 provided with the Ubuntu start menue for 16
passes, no errors were detected. I'll try Valgrind asap, too.

Thanks for your bug report. The crash looks like a memory corruption.
Could you try to get a valgrind log for it with libglib2.0-0-dbg
libgtk2.0-0-dbg gaim-dbg installed? (you can follow the instructions
from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind for that)
