after being frustrated for three days. i gave up and upgraded the system.

type "sudo apt-get upgrade"

A fix has been punched out for bug 88134. It may take a while to
trickle down, but synaptic will be able to find it with a reload and a
"mark all upgrades." And end to the bug report dupes is near!

thanks, yeah today, before reading these messages, i logged in as a kde
session and used synaptic, and there was a new version of gnome-panel.

Type:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade
And the update-manager, and all related tools will start to work again.
You can also go into Synaptic. Refresh the list. Mark all upgrades and Apply.

crash # 3, I had all the updates available, the latest one it said, I
restarted and got the crash [!], but now there is more updates.

I also marked all upgrades. It broke Nvidia. I also lost the control
panel. However, these are different bugs. This bug is fixed by
updating python-apt only. Anything else is a new issue. As someone
said to me, "You should expect problems on the bleeding edge."

ok what the hell? my gnome-panel is gone, and i dont have access to a
terminal or anything. i even had to get this firefox window open by
creating a new text file on the desktop and "open with" firefox
??
what the hell do i do now? this is after refreshing synaptic, marking
all upgrade

Fix is now distributed to the US servers. Update python-apt, and all is well.
But you may want to skip the kernel upgrade for now...

The problem described in this bug report (and its duplicates) is caused
by bug 88134, i.e. that python-apt is broken.

Just encountered the same crash after doing an update to apt, aptitude
and synaptic. The new version of apt that was installed is
0.6.46.4ubuntu8
