BUMP!!!
Gosh, there are hundreds of people all over the Google world who've
asked for this. It's not nearly as complicated as you make it sound.
Surely this could be added to gconf-editor without giving anyone that
many gray hairs?

Thank you for your bug. We don't want to divert from upstream for a such
change, and I'm not sure than a little detail like this one is worth a
configuration option. Closing the request, we don't intend to write a
patch for it

I also wanted to note that when you hover over the main menu picture, a
'tooltip' pops up that says "Main Menu" so there is no confusion
whatsoever.

This little arrow covers the text on my custom main menu applet picture.
I call it the 'menu' graphic on my desktop because that is the text that
is written on the graphic I made for the 'main menu' button, but since
you can not read the word 'menu' because of the arrow overlay, it makes
my desktop
